Jim Shirley is principal consultant with JTS Marine LLC based in the U.S. He is a 1965 graduate of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy and a 1981 graduate of Rutgers University School of Law. Jim has held an unlimited U.S. Master's license since 1970, and has served at sea as both Master and Salvage Master. He subsequently spent 28 years practicing maritime law, specializing in maritime casualty response and litigation.

Through JTS Marine LLC, Jim now provides maritime casualty investigation, marine consulting and expert witness services. He also serves as a maritime arbitrator and is a member of the Society of Maritime Arbitrators in New York.

 

 
 

Nikolai Ivanov is an English-qualified solicitor and a senior lawyer now based in New York. Prior to joining Assuranceforeningen Skuld, Nik spent 13 years as a maritime lawyer for the English law firm Holman Fenwick & Willan, including six years in the firm's Piraeus office, where he specialized in charter party, bill of lading, international trade and shipbuilding/MOA disputes.

Nik joined Skuld in 2008 as Assistant Vice President/Senior lawyer working predominantly on FD&D matters for the Scandinavian, Russian and Nordic regions. In 2010, Nik was promoted to Vice President/Head of Defense for Business Unit 2.

In 2017, Nik transferred to Skuld North America as Vice President, where he continues to specialize in shipping and commercial cases, including charter party, carriage of goods and sale/purchase contract disputes for shipowners, charterers and traders operating in the U.S., Canada, and Central and South America.

 

 
 


Wayne D. Meehan graduated from the United States Merchant Marine Academy with honors in 1976. After graduation, he sailed as Third, Second and Chief Officer aboard American Flag, oceangoing vessels. He earned his law degree at Boston University School of Law and joined the firm in 1984.

Wayne has more than 30 years experience handling all types of marine claims. He has developed a particular expertise in all types of marine casualties, and is well versed in casualty-related issues such as general average, limitation of liability, salvage and OPA 90 liabilities.

Wayne has extensive experience representing clients at U.S. Coast Guard and National Transportation Safety Board hearings. He has tried cases in Federal Court throughout the country and has handled various appeals to the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. In addition to litigation, Mr. Meehan has assisted clients in negotiating and drafting charter parties, contracts of affreightment, shipbuilding and ship repair contracts, and joint venture agreements.

 

 
 

Brian Nemeth has more than 19 years of industry experience in the global shipping, freight forwarding, and third-party-logistics industries, with a record of success in helping clients strategically improve their performance.

In addition to international transportation expertise, Brian has had extensive general supply chain experience in a variety of industry sectors. His experience from both sides of the shipping/shipper relationship has given him unique insights that he applies to both asset-heavy and asset-light companies in the industry. Prior to joining AlixPartners, Brian held various positions in the United States, Hong Kong, and Vietnam within the A.P. Moller-Maersk Group. He has an MBA from New York University.

 

 
 


Keith W. Heard is a 1977 graduate of Yale University and a 1980 graduate of the Vanderbilt University School of Law. As a maritime lawyer, Keith's work on litigated matters has included the prosecution and defense of claims for cargo damage, shortage and loss, including liquid, dry bulk and containerized shipments. It has also included work on collision and other casualty cases, including claims for General Average contribution, as well as matters involving the assertion of maritime liens. Keith's work on arbitrated matters has included the prosecution and defense of claims for breach of charter parties, Service Contracts and other types of maritime contracts. The charter party disputes cancellation, vessel misdescription, damage to main engines due to contaminated bunkers and other causes, demurrage, safe berth claims, cargo damage and hull damage to ships. In addition, he has successfully represented parties in mediation, resulting in the cost-efficient resolution of various litigated matters, and has served as an arbitrator and mediator in certain cases.

Keith has assisted cargo shippers in reviewing Service Contracts and bills of lading, and liner operators in re-drafting ocean bills of lading. In addition, he has provided advice on amendments to contractual provisions in bills of lading, Service Contracts and charter parties.

Currently a member of the NYMAR board of directors, Keith has served as the U.S. Maritime Law Association's delegate to the BIMCO Documentary Committee and as chairman of the MLA's Committee on Arbitration and ADR as well as the New York City Bar Association's Admiralty Committee.
