The USMMA Alumni Association and Foundation (AAF) has invited everyone to return to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) to honor and celebrate the school's 75th anniversary on Friday, September 21, 2018. Maritime TV will be there to cover several events on that day, including the 75th Anniversary formal dinner with the Regiment of Midshipmen which will be held in Delano Hall at 1800. During this dinner the restored cadet relief discussed in this prior Maritime TV video, will be unveiled.
Seventy-five years ago, on September 30, 1943, USMMA was dedicated by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. He noted that "the Academy serves the Merchant Marine as West Point serves the Army and Annapolis the Navy."
"This is a milestone anniversary for USMMA and one that alumni, parents, friends, current Midshipmen, faculty, and staff can be proud of," said AAF President Jim Tobin '77. "It is also a celebration for the entire nation and we look forward to a great day and a great dinner with the Regiment."
Delivering goods in both peace and war, USMMA continues to serve the defense needs and the economic well-being of the United States. Engaged in every major theater of war since 1943, USMMA reflects an incredible history of service to our country. The Battle Standard, an essential component of the Academy's Color Guard, recognizes the "142" Midshipmen who gave their lives in service to our country, and displays nine ribbons which represent the service ribbon bars earned by members of the Regiment during World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and the Persian Gulf War. USMMA is the only federal service academy privileged to carry a Battle Standard.
