USMMA Rechristening Training Vessel Kings Pointer

On Monday, June 16, the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) at Kings Point hosted a rechristening ceremony to celebrate the delivery of the Academy’s newest training vessel, T/V Kings Pointer. The ceremony was held at Mallory Pier. The guest of honor was U.S. Secretary of Transportation Anthony Foxx.  Secretary Foxx was accompanied by Acting U.S. Maritime Administrator Paul Jaenichen.

T/V Kings Pointer, formerly known as the M/V Liberty Star, once served as a Solid Rocket Booster Recovery Vessel for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). The vessel, which has been reconfigured and upgraded, will serve as a vital part of USMMA’s Cadet Shipping curriculum.
